Mining and Exploration

Did you know the cost to drill a hole
is approximately $50 million dollars?

Mineral, oil and gas exploration is an expensive and challenging process. In a way, drilling a hole is easy. The difficult part is determining exactly where to drill.

To reduce uncertainty in drilling and production of oil, mineral and gas company geologists and engineers conduct sophisticated and complex simulations and seismic analyses, including 3D modelling representing the fluid and rock properties of the subsurface and 4D modelling technology that includes production histories.

The raw data generated from these tests must be processed using computer techniques in order to obtain meaningful information. Only after a geological picture of the sub-surface is created can geophysicists determine where to send their drilling teams. The amounts of raw data and the level of processing create a huge demand for computing resources. In order to ascertain accurate and detailed information data is tested on High Performance Computer clusters starting at (1000+ cores) on a small scale spanning to (10,000+ cores) for serious number crunching.

XENON provides tailored HPC computing solutions with high-bandwidth, low-latency connections between dozens or hundreds of multi-processor, multi-core CPUs /GPUs and high-speed storage systems. XENON’s solutions are highly flexible with enhanced HPC system efficiency which results in the production of quality oil and gas engineering simulations.
